Elif, a 31-year-old business owner from Istanbul, is redefining the world of sustainable fashion. She turned her love for vintage clothing into a thriving business that repurposes dead stock fabrics into unique, high-quality designs. Her journey, however, has not been without obstacles. From navigating the uncertainty of COVID-19 to relocating her business to the Netherlands, Elif has demonstrated resilience, adaptibility, and a belief in her mission.

from vintage to sustainability

Elif’s business journey began with a small vintage shop in Istanbul. However, as she became more aware of the impact of waste in the fashion industry, she transitioned to creating sustainable fashion pieces using dead stock fabrics, high-quality materials left unused by major fashion brands.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought unexpected challenges, forcing her to think outside the box. With her physical store struggling, Elif turned to Etsy to reach international customers, particularly in Northern Europe, where interest in sustainable fashion was on the rise.

the move to the netherlands | A strategic decision

Understanding that sustainability is at the core of Dutch consumer values, Elif made the decision to relocate her business to the Netherlands. The move, however, was far from easy. She faced significant delays in securing a visa, waiting a year and a half before she could officially establish her business.

Despite these challenges, she remained determined. Now, she actively participates in local markets , directly engaging with customers and other business owners and raising awareness about sustainable fashion.

overcoming challenges | The entrepreneurial reality

Like many entrepreneurs, Elif encountered numerous hurdles along the way. Managing a small team also came with its difficulties, hiring and letting go of employees was one of the toughest aspects of running a business.

Balancing work and personal life has also been a challenge. However with the support of her husband and a deep passion for her mission, she has managed to create a fulfilling career while pursuing further eductaion in creative business at Inholland, University of Applied Sciences.

scaling up and looking ahead

Expanding her brand in the Netherlands remain one of Elif’s biggest challenges. She is currently the sole employee, managing every aspect of the business, from design to marketing. She plans to expand her reach further with a physical store in the future.

To ensure long-term sustainability, she operates two Etsy shops, one in Turkey and one in the Netherlands. While she initially considered discontinuing her vintage clothing sales in Turkey, she quickly realized that inflation and local demand required her to maintain that aspect of her business.

the importance of networking and mental health

As an entrepreneur, Elif emphasizes the importance of surrounding herself with positive and supportive individuals. She has attended various business workshops and networking events in the Netherlands in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, allowing her to connect with like-minded individuals and expand her business network.

She also highlights the significance of mental health, particularly for female entrepreneurs balancing multiple roles in life. Meditation and yoga have become essential practices that help her maintain focus and well-being.
