Each year, on November 11th, children in several parts of The Netherlands, celebrate Sint Maarten by ligthing up the streets with lanterns, singing songs, and sharing in the spirit of kindness and giving. While Halloween has a similar vibe, Sint Maarten is a typical Dutch tradition.

Here’s everything you need to know to celebrate Sint Maarten in your neighborhood.

what is Sint Maarten?

On Sint Maarten, children will go door-to-door carrying lanterns or carved pumpkins. As they sing traditional songs, they’re rewarded with treats from their neighbors. Knock on doors where lights are on or where a lantern or candle is displayed, signalling that singing is welcome.

the history behind Sint Maarten

The tradition of Sint Maarten commemorates the charitable life of Martinus of Tours, a 4th- century saint known for his generosity and kindness. One famous story tells of Martinus sharing his cloak with a beggar during a freezing night. Sint Maarten invites us all to remember the importance of helping others.

getting ready for your child’s Sint Maarten rounds

Here are a few essentials to prepare:

  • A Lantern with a Light. Your child will most probably create a lantern at school. Lights can be bought at stores like Hema, Etos or Kruidvat and supermarkets like Albert Heijn, Vomar or Deka.
  • A Strong Bag. A good bag to carry all these collected treats is a must!
  • Practice Songs! It’s always helpful to practice a few Sint Maarten songs ahead of time.

welcoming Singers to your Doorstep

Want to make your home especially welcoming? Try decorating with lights or placing a candle by the window, this signals that singing is encouraged.

The festivties generally wind down around p.m.

Wishing you and your child(ren) a wonderful and happy Sint Maarten!
